Open infrastructure for AI governance.
The map, the news, the tools, and the people for governing AI inside organizations, maintained in the open and free for anyone to use.
What this is
AI Governance Commons is a living map of every law, standard, regulator, scheme, assurance provider, insurer, vendor, institute, and credential in the field; a newsroom and research center that anyone can republish and any system can pull from an API; a free governance workspace any company can use; a public registry of companies that have self-attested to an open baseline; and a community of practitioners who meet monthly and work on shared problems. It exists to be useful to practitioners, regulators, journalists, students, and the companies that use AI, and to be the place where those groups meet.
Who runs this
Justin Ryan is the editor and founder. Data and AI governance leader with more than twenty years across banking, insurance, consulting, and federal cyber operations, including nearly six years at USAA leading second-line risk and sensitive data programs. He authored and enforced firmwide information governance policies, standards, and controls at JPMorgan Chase spanning privacy, data governance, data classification, and records management, then led USAA Bank's Sensitive Data Management program across PCI, privacy, and data governance with monthly key risk indicator reporting to the C-suite. He is now an independent AI governance subject matter expert, author, and researcher: he wrote the eight-part AI Governance Guide Series, co-authored three Technics Publications textbooks on AI data risk, privacy, and protection, serves as an ISACA subject matter expert for CRISC exam content and the Securing AI Review Manual. He combines the regulatory fluency to read emerging AI and privacy rules with the operating experience to turn them into roadmaps, standards, training, and oversight that hold up under audit and examination. More about Justin, and how to work with him.
How decisions are made
The editor decides editorial. An advisory council, once formed, advises and reviews unresolved accuracy complaints. The Deployer Baseline has its own working group and a public comment process. Conflicts of interest are disclosed on author pages and on each piece.
How to help
Write for the Commons, join a working group, become a supporter, or correct an entry from any Crosswalk page.
Operated by Synthetic Labs
Synthetic Labs is an AI governance consultancy founded by Justin Ryan. The Commons, the Wire, and the Workspace are the free side of its work; consulting is the paid side and has its own page. Consulting clients get the company's time, not a say in what the Commons covers, how an entry reads, whether an attestation is published, or what the Baseline says.
Advisory council
The advisory council is being formed. Members will be listed here with their affiliations and disclosures.
Funding and independence
No organizational supporters yet. The Commons is currently funded by Synthetic Labs. What supporters get, and what they never get.
