API and data terms
Plain language, on purpose. Last updated Nov 2, 2026.
Last updated: November 1, 2026. Working draft for review by counsel before launch.
The short version
Everything public on the Commons is available through the API and the feeds for free, under the same licences as the site. Credit us, link back, do not pretend our data is yours, do not hammer the servers, and do not use the data to build something that misleads people about what the law says. If you need more than the free limits, ask.
1. What is covered
The JSON API at /api/v1, the RSS, JSON Feed, and iCalendar feeds, the CSV and JSON downloads, the republish bundles, and the MCP endpoint. Using any of them means you accept these terms and the general terms of use.
2. Licences
Crosswalk data (entries, dates, mappings, rules) is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Wire text and playbooks are CC BY 4.0; analysis and opinion are CC BY-ND 4.0; the Deployer Baseline is CC BY 4.0. Each API response carries an X-License header. Follow the licence of each item.
3. Attribution
Every use must credit "AI Governance Commons by Synthetic Labs" with a link to the source page or to syntheticlabs.ai. For derived databases under ODbL, attribute and share alike as the licence requires. Do not remove the credit line or the counter pixel from a republish bundle.
4. Keys and limits
Without a key: 60 requests an hour per connection. With a free key: 1,000 requests a day and webhooks. Keys are personal; do not share them. We may change limits with notice on the developers page, and we may throttle or revoke a key that is abusive, that scrapes the site instead of using the API, or that is used to resell our data as a product on its own.
5. What you may not do
Present the data as authoritative legal advice; strip the "needs verification" flags or the "as of" dates; misrepresent the source or currency of the data; use the API to send spam or to attack the site; or use the data to train a model that is then presented as the Commons or as speaking for Synthetic Labs.
6. No warranty and no liability
The data is editorial, may be incomplete or out of date, and is provided "as is". Sections 3 to 7 of the general terms of use apply in full: not advice, do your own research, no warranty, no liability beyond what the law refuses to let us exclude.
7. Changes
Breaking changes to the API are announced on the developers page and on the Wire at least 30 days before they take effect where practical. The version number in the path changes when the shape of a response changes incompatibly.
